Fox News host Sean Hannity condemns U.S. Olympic Committee’s plans to change the American flag on its Paris 2024 logo as a ‘waste of time’ amid Gwen Berry flag-snub controversy
The United States Olympic Committee is considering redesigning the American flag on its logo, Fox News reported on Monday night – with host Sean Hannity describing it as ‘an awful idea.’
The USOC is contemplating changes which may be brought in after the Tokyo Olympics this year, and after the 2022 winter Olympics, which will be held in Beijing.
On July 6, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee asked Olympians and Paralympian associations to fill out an online survey. One of the items in the survey is a proposed change to the Stars & Stripes to be used in USOPC materials.
‘Here is my message – stop wasting your team’s time and money with a redesign of the American flag – it’s an awful idea,’ he said.
Sean Hannity on Monday night spoke out against a proposal to change the U.S. flag on the logo of the Olympic Committee
‘Our stars & stripes should be the only flag representing our country at the Olympics and the Paralympics – there are so many amazing athletes and champions we are all so proud of.’
The new flag could potentially have five stars, instead of 50, and fewer stripes.
‘We already have our flag,’ Hannity said.
Hannity said that the new flag, with five stars and four red stripes, was unnecessary
The Olympic Committee said that they were in ‘the very early stages’ of a possible redesign
Kate Hartman, a spokesperson for USOC, told Fox News the committee is in the early design stages and is brainstorming a variety of concepts with the stakeholders.
‘We are in the very early stages of potentially exploring new brand executions for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee,’ the committee said in a statement to Fox News.
‘It is common practice in creative development to share a variety of concepts with stakeholders to [elicit] reaction and feedback that will then be used to determine next steps.
‘What has been sent to you is just one of dozens of ideas shared in this brainstorming and surveying process.’
Debate about the meaning of the U.S. flag has been in the headlines following hammer thrower Gwen Berry’s protest during the Olympic trials in Oregon last month.
Berry has said the national anthem ‘doesn’t speak for me’.
