Haiti Mourns High-Profile Attorney Gunned Down After He Called For Reforms
President Jovenel Moïse has declared three days of mourning for Monferrier Dorval, the head of the Port-au-Prince bar, who was killed hours after a radio interview. The mourning begins today.
Dorval, 64, was gunned down Aug. 28 after calling for changes to the Haitian constitution in a Radio Magik9 interview. The killing plunged many Haitians into sadness and triggered calls for justice. In a statement, the Gathering of National Progressive Democrats said, “All hope is lost if justice is not done.”
In announcing the mourning period, Moïse assured the country that Dorval’s killers would be found, saying “this is one crime too many.” Dorval has been replaced by Marie Suzy Legros in the interim. Continue reading
Six Haitians Died, Seven Injured, In Bus Accident
Six Haitians died and seven were left injured after a bus overloaded with merchandise crashed in Barahona, Dominican Republic Sunday.
The bus carried about 30 Haitians. Officials have not yet released the names of the Haitians who died. Continue reading
Jacques Sampeur Elected President of Haitian Media Association
Radio-Television Antilles’ General Director Jacques Sampeur was unanimously elected as the president of the National Association of Haitian Media, known by its French acronym ANMH. Electors cast their ballots Saturday during an event at Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince.
Sampeur replaces Frantz Duval as ANMH’s president and will serve a two-year term.
Sampeur said he will reinforce the spirit of unity among media organizations. Continue reading
