US official during NYC diaspora visit: Haitians have to “write own story”

BROOKLYN — On Nov. 5, Brian A. Nichols, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, met with a group of Haitian-Americans in New York. Haitian Times Publisher Garry Pierre-Pierre interviewed Nichols about the visit. An excerpt of the conversation, edited for length and clarity, follows.

Garry Pierre-Pierre is a Pulitzer-prize winning, multimedia and entrepreneurial journalist. In 1999, he left the New York Times to launch the Haitian Times, a New York-based English-language publication serving the Haitian Diaspora. He is also the co-founder of the City University Graduate School of Journalism‘s Center for Community and Ethnic Media and a senior producer at CUNY TV.
