A huge huntsman spider gave a farming family a fright when it crawled out of their child’s school shoe.

The Western Australian family was shocked when they discovered a large spider hiding in their son’s school shoe on Tuesday.

Ruth Tinley shared her video on Friday that shows the slinky spider emerging from the shoe.

Squeals could be heard as the spider pushed itself out of the shoe and revealed its impressive size.

The huntsman spider prefers to live in small spaces and is known for hiding out in shoes throughout Australia.

Although the spider is not considered ‘dangerous’ their bite can be very painful and cause a lot of swelling to the site.

Ruth said the family is used to ‘creepy crawlies’ coming out of the bush since they live on a farm but the spider managed to raise alarm.

‘Creepy crawlies are always coming in from the bush,’ she said.

‘We stumbled across this huge huntsman spider in our shed and it gave (us) quite a scare.’

She also reassured viewers that the children are well trained in checking their shoes before they put them on to avoid spider bites.

‘We store our shoes outside and the kids all know to check their shoes before putting them on!,’ she said.

What are Huntsman spiders?

Huntsman spiders are large, long-legged spiders. They are mostly grey to brown, sometimes with banded legs.

The banded huntsman is one of the largest in Australia.

They are found in the warmer parts of eastern Australia, and range from NSW to Queensland.

They are commonly found living under loose bark on trees, in crevices on rock walls and in logs, under rocks and slabs of bark on the ground, and on foliage.

Huntsman spiders of many species sometimes enter houses. They are also notorious for entering cars, and being found hiding behind sun visors or running across the dashboard.

These spiders are extremely fast, and have the ability to run sideways and squeeze into very narrow crevices.

Direct handling is not recommended. Although these spiders are not dangerously venomous and are quite timid, adults do have large fangs and could give a painful bite.

If you need to transfer them, they can be easily guided into a jar or plastic container.
